AM – General Music Teacher

AM in Aarhus is the broadest music teacher education offered at the Academy. You will be introduced to a wide range of subjects and projects, and you will acquire the knowledge, skills and qualifications necessary to become a music teacher and musician.

Right from the start, the programme focuses on developing both your teaching and instrument performance skills.

The AM programme is offered at BMus and MMus level at the Academy.

Classical and Jazz/Pop

AM can be chosen by both classical and jazz/pop musicians. The programme requires you to be familiar with a wide range of styles, and you will therefore receive tuition on both classical and jazz/pop subjects, no matter if you study a classical or jazz/pop main instrument.

You will gain a widespread network, and you will find yourself able to facilitate and participate in cross-disciplinary projects throughout the study environment at the Academy.

Life as an AM student

As an AM student, you must work in a varied and entrepreneurial fashion, and you will be in touch with many different people. You will also become part of a social and vibrant study environment with other AM students whose sense of unity extends far beyond the classroom.

You won’t be any less busy after graduation. AM graduates are seldom short of work, as their versatile and well-grounded professionalism is in high demand in the music business.

Bachelor degree (3 years)

On the AM bachelor programme (BMus General Music Teacher), you will quickly start teaching subjects like choir and ensemble playing to different classes, while receiving tuition yourself on subjects such as Ear Training, Music Theory, and your main instrument.

The core subjects of the programme (Elementary Music Education, Choir Conducting, and Ensemble Teaching Practice) are divided into various classical, jazz/pop/global, children’s music, and adult music modules, giving you performance and teaching skills.

The course subjects are divided into the following fields:

  • Main study area: subjects where the student is a performer as well as subjects that support this aspect
  • Pedagogics: subjects where the student communicates and teaches as well as subjects that support this aspect
  • General studies: elementary support subjects mandatory for all BMus students
  • Entrepreneurial Studies: subjects and projects where students gain experience as entrepreneurs and managers of dynamic processes and acquire career management tools
  • Bachelor project: The programme is concluded with the bachelor project; a specialisation defined by the student based on his or her interests and requirements

Master’s degree (2 years)

The AM MMus programme builds on the skills and qualifications acquired on the BMus programme.

You will immerse yourself in three supplementary main subjects in addition to your main instrument, either classical or jazz/pop/global. Supplementary main subjects include Choir Conducting, Ear Training, or Main Instrument Pedagogics, and all include a communication aspect and a pedagogical course.

The course subjects are divided into the following fields:

  • Main study area: subjects where the student is a performer as well as subjects that support this aspect
  • Pedagogics: subjects where the student communicates and teaches as well as subjects that support this aspect
  • Entrepreneurial Studies: subjects and projects where the student explores the role as entrepreneur and manager of dynamic processes, and in addition develops his or her career management tools
  • Master’s project: the project itself as well as tuition in the form of guidance and subjects that prepare the student for project work.
