Marco Socias
Marco Socias - honorary Professor 2011-2016
Directly to Aarhus from the homeland of the guitar, Andalusia: Andalusian guitarist Marco Socías was appointed honorary Professor in connection with a concert at the Academy on 1 December 2011. In the days following the concert, Socías held a masterclass for the Academy’s classical guitarists.
Marco Socías began early. At the age of 10, he started at the conservatory in his hometown of Malaga, and already at the age of 16 he was allowed to accompany the famous countertenor Andrew Lawrence-King. At the age of 18, he started teaching at the conservatory in Malaga himself, and at the age of 20 he competed for a permanent position as a teacher at the same place. Already the following year, he was appointed professor. He thus became the youngest guitar professor in Spain ever.
However, the young Socías did not want to settle down in the Spanish province, so after three years he went to Germany to continue his studies. In the 90s he lived exclusively by playing concerts and giving masterclasses, which is quite unusual for a classical guitarist.
At the time of his appointment as honorary professor at RAMA, Marco Socías was 45 years old and an extremely reputable artist and teacher on the international music scene. He has played concerts all over the world, including the USA, Russia and Japan and has performed in a wide range of famous concert halls with reputable orchestras such as The Berlin Radio Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic.
Socías has also recorded a number of CDs, including with music by Spain’s greatest composer in recent times, Joaquín Rodrigo. When Rodrigo heard one of Socías’ recordings in 1998, he said: “Socías delivers a deep and sensitive journey through some of my most symbol-laden works, with a natural musicality and a convincing technique.”
Socías now lives in Malaga again and is a professor at the highly regarded music conservatory in San Sebastian, where guitarists from all over Europe seek out his lessons.
The contract for Marco Socías has come about through ass. Professor Frederik Munk Larsen at RAMA. It is the first time in Denmark that the title of professor is attached to a guitar teacher.
