Koppel, Møller & Östrøm – Time Wire
Assistant Professor Søren Møller
“Time Wire“: A pioneering artistic research project in electronic music by Assistant Professor Søren Møller.
Time Wire is a sophisticated new album and artistic research project (KUV) led by Assistant Professor Søren Møller. Featuring world-renowned Swedish drummer Magnus Östrøm (of Esbjörn Svensson Trio fame) and acclaimed saxophonist Benjamin Koppel, the project marks a significant exploration into the integration of electronic orchestration and modern instrumental music.
Bridging Composition and Technology
Time Wire is more than a conventional album release; it serves as a theoretical extension of the pedagogical framework at the academy. The compositions, created by pianist and keyboardist Søren Møller, serve as primary case studies within composition pedagogy for Master’s students at the Royal Academy of Music.
The project addresses a current trend in the modern musical landscape, where students increasingly demand stylistic breadth and in-depth expertise in electronic production. By focusing on synthesizer programming and digital signal processing, Møller bridges the gap between traditional musical understanding and the complex electronic universe of modern music.
Sonic Innovation and Performance
The album’s soundscape is characterized by a precise fusion of analog warmth and digital precision. Key elements of the production include:
- Deep Synthesis: Extensive use of complex pad textures, arpeggios, and Moog synthesizer bass.
- Hybrid Instrumentation: Rhodes piano improvisations processed through advanced effect pedal chains.
- Targeted Orchestration: Works composed specifically to leverage the unique capabilities of modern computer plugins and hardware synthesizers.
An Elite Scandinavian Collaboration
To realize this vision, Møller has reunited with his long-time musical partner, Benjamin Koppel. The two have collaborated on numerous critically acclaimed releases, and with Time Wire, they return to an experimental electronic aesthetic. The trio is completed by Magnus Östrøm, whose career with E.S.T. (Esbjörn Svensson Trio) helped redefine the boundaries of the jazz trio on a global scale.
