RAMA Vocal Center

RAMA Vocal Center – A Global Leader in Jazz/Pop Choral Conducting

Since its establishment in 2006, RAMA Vocal Center at The Royal Academy of Music has developed into an international centre for education, artistic development and innovation in Jazz/Pop Choral Conducting.

At The Royal Academy of Music, you can study the field at several levels and through different educational pathways:

  • Bachelor’s level – through the Music Leadership programme in Aarhus, specialising in either Jazz/Pop Choral Conducting or General Music Leadership, or as part of the Jazz/Pop Music programme in Aalborg
  • Master’s level – through the specialised KARK programme or General Music Leadership, both based in Aarhus.
  • Soloist level – through advanced artistic specialisation at the highest international level in Aarhus
  • Continuing education – through the part-time Professional Master’s programme in Aarhus

A defining strength of RAMA Vocal Center is its faculty. Students work closely with highly experienced artists, conductors, arrangers and educators who are actively shaping the field through performance, teaching, artistic development and international collaboration.

As a centre, RAMA Vocal Center brings together knowledge and experience developed over many years. This accumulated expertise extends beyond the specialised programmes and contributes to the wider educational environment at The Royal Academy of Music. Through teaching, projects, ensembles, workshops and interdisciplinary collaboration, students across the Academy can benefit from the artistic and pedagogical knowledge developed within the centre.

The teaching environment is rooted in close artistic exchange between students and faculty. Artistic practice, pedagogy and development work are closely connected, allowing new ideas and methods to emerge directly from rehearsal rooms, concerts, workshops and teaching situations – and to feed back into the education of future students.

Across the programmes, students develop their artistic and pedagogical practice through conducting, vocal technique, arranging, composition, improvisation and ensemble leadership. A distinctive part of the environment is the continued development of innovative approaches to choral music, including The Intelligent Choir (TIC) and Vocal Painting (VOPA), alongside new perspectives on rehearsal techniques, conducting, arranging and vocal composition.

RAMA Vocal Center also connects the Academy with the wider international vocal music community. Students and professionals from Denmark and abroad meet through degree programmes, boot camps, workshops, performances, symposia and international collaborations.

An important partner is Aarhus Vocal Festival (AAVF), one of the major international meeting places for contemporary vocal music. The collaboration creates opportunities for students and faculty to engage with leading international artists, conductors and educators, while sharing knowledge and artistic developments from RAMA Vocal Center with the wider vocal community.

If you have any questions or would like guidance on which educational pathway is right for you, please get in touch with Professor Jim Daus Hjernøe, Head of RAMA Vocal Center.
