Huw Thomas
Teacher, Ensemble TeachingHuw’s career as a conductor started in 2001. Since then his work has grown into a vast experience of styles and ensembles. His formative years started in 1992 as he was awarded a place in the National Youth Orchestra of Wales. Study at Birmingham Conservatoire followed and upon completing a BMus (Hons) Huw took a job playing Trumpet with a professional orchestra in Portugal, along with regular guest work in Spain.
In 2004 he won the Denis and Maud Wright conducting award. This led to lessons with Elgar Howarth. In 2005 Huw also received the J R Memorial Cup for his conducting.
Huw has worked extensively with orchestras and made his conducting debut with the Sinfonia Tamesa in London in 2006. Subsequently, he also performed with the Sunderland Symphony Orchestra. During this period he attended lessons and Masterclasses with Bramwell Tovey (Vancouver Symphony Orchestra) and Jason Lai (Singapore Symphony Orchestra) to name but a few.
In 2007, Huw began an MA in Music Performance at Durham University studying with Ray Farr and Elgar Howarth. This close association nurtured a keen interest in contemporary music, leading to his appointment as conductor of the professional contemporary music ensemble the Komposit Orchestra. This ensemble premiered new works by some of the UK’s top composers.
During the mid to late 2000’s he spent time working with some of Europe’s finest Brass and Wind Bands, with performances and projects in Denmark, Norway, France and the Netherlands.
In 2017 he was appointed as Principal Conductor of the Film Orchestra UK, a symphony orchestra dedicated to performing film music.
Having moved to Denmark in 2018, Huw has worked with international singers as part of a concert series, these include Bobo Moreno, Stig Rossen, Jette Torp and Jesper Lundgaard.
More recently he’s been appointed at the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music Aarhus/Aalborg as a Lecturer in Ensemble Directing (conducting) and continues to work extensively in the UK, The Netherlands and Scandinavia. Including past and current projects with Lyngby Taarbæk Harmonieorkester, Aarhus Harmonieorkester and the Nordkraft Big Band.
