Wayne Siegel: Complete Works for Trombone – Niels-Ole Bo Johansen

In the course of a long career, I have worked closely with many composers. One of the most fruitful such collaborations has been with the Danish-American composer Wayne Siegel.

In the course of a long career, I have worked closely with many composers. One of the most fruitful such collaborations has been with the Danish-American composer Wayne Siegel. His music is captivating, evocative and original. Since 1997 I have presented dozens of performances of Jackdaw in Europe, North America, Cuba and China. I have also had the pleasure of collaborating with Wayne on several beautiful, refined and captivating works, many of which I have commissioned.

Over the years Wayne has composed enough works for trombone to fill an entire CD, and for this I am most grateful. It is also a great pleasure to be able to present a bonus track with Sea Creatures for six trombones by composer Mira Siegel, Wayne’s daughter.
Niels-Ole Bo Johansen

Program notes by Wayne Siegel
I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to work closely with Niels-Ole Bo Johansen, a brilliant performer, enthusiastic musician and generous and inspiring colleague at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus.

With the exception of previously released recordings of Jackdaw and Jericho 2.0, all the tracks included on this release were recorded during the Corona pandemic in 2020 and 2021. With concerts cancelled, studios closed and limited ways to meet, Niels-Ole and I decided to make the most of the situation. Niels-Ole set up a makeshift recording space in his home and spent countless hours recording and overdubbing. During the process we discussed strategies and exchanged recordings and comments on line without actually meeting. Percussionist Henrik Knarborg Larsen was involved in this process for recording Postcard from a Truckstop. Along the way I mixed and edited these recordings.

Due to a lot of hard work on the part of Niels-Ole, the results are remarkably good, especially considering the obstacles involved in the recording process, a process which turned out to be both fun
and satisfying thanks to Niels-Ole’s meticulous care and untiring enthusiasm.
