Christian Lindberg is regarded as one of the most influential brass musicians of all time. His significance for the trombone as a solo instrument can be compared to Paganini’s impact on the violin and Liszt’s on the piano. Through his playing, he has reached far beyond specialist circles, for example with Motorbike Concerto, written specifically for him by Jan Sandström in 1988. This virtuosic work expands the expressive possibilities of the trombone and is one that Lindberg often performs wearing full motorcycle gear.
Lindberg has given the world premieres of more than 300 works for his instrument, most of them composed for him, including more than 135 major concertos. He has also recorded more than 150 solo albums. In addition, he has an extensive career as a conductor, leading many of the world’s foremost symphony orchestras. Lindberg has served as music director for several orchestras, and as a composer he has written more than 50 commissioned works for orchestras and ensembles.

Honorary Professor
“Honorary Professor” is an honorary title awarded for a five-year period, typically to a musician of international distinction. Externally, such an appointment helps raise the profile of the Academy; internally, it brings fresh perspectives and great inspiration. An honorary professor typically gives masterclasses a couple of times each year, and in Lindberg’s case, the Academy looks forward to a particularly high level of activity.

International Network
The agreement with Christian Lindberg has been made possible through the Academy’s extensive international network, not least through Professor of trombone Niels-Ole Bo Johansen. This network has recently been strengthened further with the appointment of Spanish tuba professor Pablo Fernández as the new Head of the Classical Department.
