Längtan heter min arvedel

Mezzo-soprano Emilia Juvonen and pianist Sonja Honkamaa from Finland present a concert with their common cultural heritage: Finnish art songs about forests and wood spirits, stormy seas and souls, and the connection to the nature of the North – even from distance. In the times of warming and greying winters, the longing for snowy landscapes gets a new meaning. The image is in danger of becoming a fantasy and the far away home vanishing completely.

The late Romantic repertoire paints powerful images of the nature and its reflection on the landscapes of the soul. The poetry is often melancholic in spirit, but not without occasional ray of sun and spring flowers.

The program includes songs by Jean Sibelius (1865-1957), Oskar Merikanto (1868-1924), Toivo Kuula (1883-1918), Leevi Madetoja (1887-1947), Helvi Leiviskä (1902-1982) and Einojuhani Rautavaara (1928-2016).
