A highly experienced orchestral musician and educator will now lead the classical programmes at RAMA.<\/em><\/p>\n

Fifty-four-year-old Pablo Fern\u00e1ndez will take up the position of Head of Studies at RAMA on 1 September, with responsibility for approximately 150 classical students. He has been affiliated with the Academy in Aarhus since 2021 and has lived in Denmark since 2014. Prior to that, Fern\u00e1ndez was Principal Tuba of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, one of Spain’s leading orchestras. Since 2001, he has also served as Professor of Tuba in both Barcelona and Madrid.<\/p>\n

Extensive and Wide-Ranging International Experience<\/h3>\n

As an educator, Fern\u00e1ndez brings extensive experience not only within his own specialist field but also in the administration and management of higher music education. He has worked extensively with chamber music and brass ensemble leadership and is a sought-after guest teacher. He has also worked with youth orchestras and served on the juries of numerous international competitions.<\/p>\n

Fern\u00e1ndez is deeply involved in international organizational leadership and development. He has led several major national congresses and festivals and currently serves as President of the Spanish Tuba and Euphonium Association (AETYB) and as a Board Member of the International Tuba-Euphonium Association (ITEA).<\/p>\n

It is precisely this broad international experience that forms an important part of the background for the appointment of Pablo Fern\u00e1ndez. Speaking about the appointment, Principal Keld Hosbond says:<\/p>\n

\u201cWith his strong international artistic profile and extensive professional network, Pablo Fern\u00e1ndez further strengthens the Academy\u2019s international outlook. At the same time, he brings high academic standards and considerable artistic authority to the leadership of our classical programmes. His appointment represents an important step in the continued development of the Academy\u2019s classical music environment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Denmark beckons<\/h3>\n

Fern\u00e1ndez became Principal Tuba of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra at the age of just 22. Throughout his career, he has toured Europe, North America, Central America, and Asia as an orchestral musician, soloist, and member of various chamber ensembles. He is a co-founder of several Spanish brass ensembles and has contributed to recordings for a number of international record labels, including Decca, EMI, and Naxos.<\/p>\n

In 2014, Fern\u00e1ndez moved with his family to Aarhus, where his wife had been affiliated with the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra for many years. From his home in Denmark, he continued his teaching activities in Barcelona and Madrid while also working as a freelance musician.<\/p>\n

Since joining RAMA as a teacher in 2021, Fern\u00e1ndez has dedicated significant effort to expanding the Academy\u2019s tuba class and strengthening the entire brass community through concerts, masterclasses, chamber music projects, and even social media.<\/p>\n

Fern\u00e1ndez already feels a strong connection to both the Academy and the city of Aarhus. He explains:<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the very beginning, I was delighted by the atmosphere, the people, the facilities, and the musical environment. When the position of Head of Studies became available, I saw it as a very exciting opportunity to take a new step and apply my experience in a different way.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2025, together with RAMA’s Professor of Trombone, he helped organize the European Low Brass Seminar in Aarhus, bringing together around 60 low-brass students and teachers from five European conservatoires. In 2027, he will also be part of the team behind the Christian Lindberg International Solo Competition, an international solo competition for brass and percussion players to be held at the Academy in Aarhus in September.<\/p>\n

As early as next week, audiences in Aarhus will have the opportunity to experience Pablo Fern\u00e1ndez’s infectious musicianship and energy when he leads a group of brass students performing at the grand closing event of Aarhus Festival, Seeing Stars, on Sunday, 6 September. Before all lights around the Musikhusparken area are switched off, the students will perform music composed in part by Fern\u00e1ndez specifically for the occasion. He has also played an active role in the development of this spectacular festival event.<\/p>\n

The appointment of Pablo Fern\u00e1ndez brings a refreshing international perspective to the Academy. And he quite literally likes to keep his feet off the ground: ever since he joined the Spanish Air Force Band in Madrid as a tuba player at the age of 18, he has been fascinated by aviation. He earned a private pilot’s licence and spent many years flying a Cessna 172. Since moving to Denmark, however, the real aircraft has gradually been replaced by a flight simulator.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
