Concert with Korean flute virtuoso Hyelim Kim, who plays the traditional Korean daegeum flute. At the concert, she plays together with two teachers from the Academy, bassist and composer Torben Westergaard and songwriter and pianist Kasper Staub.<\/p>\n

The audience is in for a very special experience, where western jazz\/pop music meets traditional Korean music.<\/p>\n

Hyelim Kim<\/h4>\n

As composer and\u00a0daegeum<\/em>\u00a0(Korean flute) soloist, Dr Hyelim Kim has been\u00a0using\u00a0pioneering intercultural\/interdisciplinary approaches\u00a0through rooted\u00a0in Korean traditional music.<\/p>\n

As a daegeum<\/em>\u00a0virtuoso, Kim was selected as an \u2018emerging artist\u2019 by the Korean Arts Council and as the Kumho Young Artist, has been invited to perform a live session with Nils Frahm on BBC Radio 3\u2019s celebrated Late Junction, and was the soloist on the world premier of a daegeum<\/em>\u00a0 concertino performed with the Orchestre de chambre de Paris, to name a few. She has also won prizes at various acclaimed competitions, including the Gold Medal at the Korean National Taeg\u016dm Competition and the 1st prize at the Korean National Chongro Music Competition.<\/p>\n

Kim has performed at various prestigious festivals worldwide, including the London Jazz Festival, Melbourne Women\u2019s Festival (Melbourne), China International Bamboo Flute Festival (Yuping), the World Classics (England), the Shubbak Festival (London), and the Creativity Unlimited Festival (Sydney). Kim is a regular member of the Third Orchestra (Barbican Centre).<\/p>\n

Kim has extended her musical practice to the interdisciplinary sphere. \u2018Korean Music with Nature\u2019 is a series of videos she directed and performed in with support from the Korean Ministry of Culture, and PRS Foundation (UK) funded her \u2018Dansang\u2019 short films, which won the Best Music Award at the Experimental, Dance & Music Film Festival (Los Angeles) in 2021. Some of Kim\u2019s projects have been documented in her monograph \u2018Tradition and Creativity in Korean Taeg\u016dm Flute Performance\u2019 published by Routledge in 2021.<\/p>\n
